More students, same number of graduates
The latest numbers from the National Center for Education Statistics are in: "College enrollment continues to rise, and student aid along with it, but graduation rates have remained level."
In other words, more students are going to college and taking out loans to do so, but more than 40 percent still do not have a diploma to show for it six years into their studies. In our latest report card on higher education in Minnesota, half of the state universities didn't even crack the 50 percent mark.
The national 57 percent six-year graduation rate is unacceptable. Restrictive transfer policies are part of the problem, as we noted in a recent letter to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. But ultimately, the causes vary between universities. One thing is sure, no solution will be forthcoming unless trustees look into the issue.
